Joe Biden’s Cabinet: Nominations for National Security Team

Joe Biden is all set to become the 46th President of the United States and he has also announced his nominations for the new Cabinet. The new team consists of several veterans from Barack Obama’s term as the President of the United States. With this, he has a power-packed team for National Security and the new Foreign Policy. Let us have a look at the newly announced nominations:

  • Secretary of Homeland Security: Alejandro Mayorkas

During Barack Obama’s term, Alejandro Mayorkas served as the deputy DHS Secretary. He is a partner at the WilmerHale law firm as of the present situation.

  • Special Presidential Envoy for Climate: John Kerry

John Kerry was a nominee of the Democratic Party for the 2004 Presidential Elections. He is a longtime senator of Massachusetts. After Hillary Clinton departed from Foggy Bottom, Kerry became the second Secretary of State during the period between 2013 and 2017 under Barack Obama’s term.

  • Director of National Intelligence: Avril Haines

The first woman Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines has served s the Deputy National Security Adviser and deputy CIA officer at the time of Obama’s Presidential term. This is a historic decision because she’s going to be the first female Director of National Intelligence and also, she is all set to become the highest-ranking woman in the community of U.S. intelligence.

  • Secretary of State: Antony Blinken

He is a Foreign Policy Advisor and when Biden was the Vice-President, he was the National Security Advisor of Biden. Also, during the last two years of Obama’s Presidential term, he was the Deputy Secretary of State.

  • U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations: Linda Thomas-Greenfield

Linda Thomas-Greenfield is a veteran diplomat who during Obama’s period as the President was the Secretary of State for African Affairs. Donald Trump did not trust diplomats and so, during his term, he fired her. Now she has secured her place as the nominee of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

  • National Security Advisor: Jake Sullivan

Jake Sullivan is a Domestic Policy Advisor. He was also the successor of Antony Blinken as the National Security Advisor of the then Vice-President Joe Biden during Obama’s term. He has also served as Hillary Clinton’s advisor. In case of the situations that led to the 2015 nuclear deal, he was a participant in the secret talks with Iran.

Biden has brought forwards a strong and well-experienced team for his cabinet. The women are holding strong positions. 53% of the senior transitions staff constitutes of women and 52% of all transition staff also constitutes of women. While Kamala Harris is all set to become the first-ever female Vice-President of the United States, Avril Haines will become the first female Director of National Intelligence. There are better expectations from this newly announced team which is well chosen with a great deal of experience and work in their respective fields.
