Washington, D.C. — The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has turned into a bit of a circus this week. After a big renovation gave it a fresh patriotic blue look, the water quickly turned bright green with algae. Then came the claims of vandalism and arrests. So what really went down? The Main Person ArrestedThe most high-profile case involves David Hearn, a 67-year-old former U.S. Olympic canoe racer from Bethesda, Maryland. Hearn was out on a long bike ride (around 64 miles) when he stopped at the Reflecting Pool. He saw workers dealing with the algae and the new blue sealant, got curious, and reached into the water to touch it. That’s when U.S. Park Police arrested him for misdemeanor destruction of government property. He was held for about five hours before being released. Hearn has a court date set for July 9. He says he wasn’t trying to damage anything — he was simply checking out what was going on. Video from the scene shows him near the workers who were cleaning the pool, which matches his story. Other Arrests and Plenty of RumorsPresident Trump posted that “multiple individuals” were arrested for vandalizing the pool and warned they could face serious jail time. Reports mention at least one other person being detained for allegedly tampering with the new sealant. But some of the wilder stories didn’t hold up. Claims about “two Antifa operatives” caught dumping buckets of algae into the pool started as satire and quickly got debunked. There’s no solid evidence of any organized political vandalism. What Caused the Algae Problem? The pool just went through a $14+ million renovation that included a special “American Flag Blue” sealant for the nation’s 250th anniversary. Once they refilled it, the shallow water combined with warm June weather caused a fast algae bloom — apparently one of the bigger ones they’ve seen this time of year.Workers have been out there using skimmers, hydrogen peroxide, and other treatments to get it under control and fix some spots where the liner came loose. It looks more like a maintenance headache that turned into a national story than some big conspiracy. Still, the whole situation has sparked plenty of debate online.
